OUR MISSION

The mission of the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office is to provide the citizens of our County the best death investigation available in order to render a cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious death.

We will constantly train and strive to educate ourselves on the latest investigative techniques and implement the result of research and testing to provide families and the justice system with facts pertaining to the decedent's demise.

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office will partner with our community to educate our citizens on measures to prevent and decrease death associated with circumstances within their control.

We are committed to rising above normal expectations and strive to be cutting edge in our approach to the service of the citizens of Spartanburg County.

Respect for decedents, answers for families and finding the truth based on evidence and testimony.

 

What does Coroner's office do?

Performs independent investigations into violent, suspicious deaths, deaths that occur outside of hospitals and deaths that occur suddenly or unexpectedly. Notifies families when unexpected deaths occur, such as in traffic fatalities or homicides.

About Your Coroner

Rusty Clevenger is a lifelong Spartanburg resident, the son of Jerry and Gail Clevenger. He has a wife of 29 years and two adult children. Rusty attented district 6 schools and graduated from Dorman High School in 1982. He attended Spartanburg Methodist College where he took Criminal Justice courses, certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer. Rusty is a past President of the South Carolina Coroner's Association, Certified Law Enforcement Basic Instructor teching specialized classes to traffic safety officers, dive teams and any area of basic forensics.

He is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and numerous specialized schools with an emphasis in death investigation to include Advanced Homicide Investigation, 
Accident Reconstruction Schools, Prosecution of Death Penalty case seminars, Medico-Legal Death Investigation schools, and others that include
Bomb Blast re-construction and Forensic Internships with 
State Law Enforcement to name a few.
