Chief Investigator Randy Bogan has 30 plus years in Law Enforcement. He is ABMDI certified with the American Board of Medico legal Death Examiners. Randy has worked the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office as a Uniform Patrol Officer for 11years, a Narcotics Officer for 4 years and Forensic I. D. Officer for 10 years. Chief Investigator Bogan has been with the Coroner's Office for 9 years. He is an expert witness is crime scene investigation and marijuana analysis.
Randy is the recipient of the 2005 Solicitor's Office Award, Deputy Coroner S C Coroner's Association Award and Coroner's Investigator of the Year Award. Chief Investigator Bogan has been a driving instructor for SCCJEA for 12 years. He has obtained certificates on the state and federal level in basic and advanced DNA collection, Facial Identification of FBI Academy, basic and advanced photography school, blood stain analysis school and Marijuana eradication and analysis school.
He is a current member of the SC Coroner's Association, ABMDI Medical Legal Examiners, the International Homicide Investigation Association, Arson Investigation, SC Coroner's Association and SC Law Enforcement Officer’ s Association.
Assistant Chief Investigator
Assistant Chief Investigator Jonathan Lawson has 15 plus years in Law Enforcement. During his career, Assistant Chief Lawson was employed with the Spartanburg City Police Department as a Narcotic investigator assigned to the FBI Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and a K-9 Handler. Assistant Chief Lawson has also been employed with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office for several years, where he was assigned as the supervisor with the Crime Scene unit, in which he was responsible for all Homicide and Violent crime investigations which involved crime scene documentation, evidence collection, and evidence processing. He is a member of the Coroner’s Association and the South Carolina Division of the international association for identification. Assistant Chief Lawson has obtained extensive training in wound pattern analysis, shooting incident reconstruction, marijuana analysis, crime scene investigator school, coroner’s school, medico legal death investigation, autoerotic death investigation, Crime Scene reconstruction, latent print examination and Identification, Hazmat operations, grade crossing collision investigation, Advanced Homicide Investigation and many other specialized training fields. Assistant Chief Lawson is a native of Spartanburg County and graduate from Paul M. Dorman High School.
Investigator Kelly Baty is a graduate of Broome High School. Kelly joined the Coroner's Office in 2015 as an investigator. He has 21 years of law enforcement experience with employment at Spartanburg County Communications, City of Pacolet, City of Cayce and City of Landrum, Westview-Fairforest Fire Department and BMW plant. He has had training in the Law Enforcement Reserve Program, Basic Law Enforcement, Radar, DMT, Advanced DUI Detection, Investigators Drug School, Highway Interdiction, Introduction to Investigative Techniques, Marijuana Analysis, Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness, Specific Skill Instructor-Field, Aggressive Criminal Enforcement-Field, Homeland Security (WMD Law Enforcement Protective Measures, Homeland Security (COBRA) Hands on Training, FBI Large Vehicle Bomb Post Blast Crime Scene, LECC White Collar Crime Issues for SC Law Enforcement, Cell Phone Data Extraction, NCIC Inquiry certification and ACE School. Kelly has volunteered in many programs to include Pacolet Mills Rescue Squad, Pacolet Fire Department and his church. Investigator Baty is a member of the South Carolina Coroner's Association and South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Investigator Jeanne Burnett has been with the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office since 2014, named Investigator of the year in 2016.
Prior to becoming a full time investigator, she worked as a reserve officer for the Coroner’s office for several years.
Investigator Burnett is a native of Spartanburg County where is graduated from Boiling Springs High School. She is currently working on her BA from Columbia College.
She has had specialized training in Child Death Investigations, Homicide Investigations, Blood Pathogen, Blood Spatter Analysis, Mass Fatality, Entomology, Elderly Abuse and Death, Forensic Photography, Train Fatalities, Chemical Deaths and Devastation, Crime Scene Investigation and Human Trafficking.
Jeanne is a member of The South Carolina Coroners Association ,The South Carolina Law Enforcement Association and The City of Spartanburg’s Cold Case Team.
Jeanne is also a Real Estate Broker and works with Regions Realty in Boiling Springs, She also works with several rescues in the SC/GA regions serving animals in need, specializing in large breed dogs.
Prior to Law Enforcement Jeanne worked in the Mortgage Business for 14 years.
Lorie Sprouse is a graduate of Spartanburg Technical College and Cleveland Community College. She is a certified paramedic and worked with Spartanburg EMS before coming to the Coroner's Office as in Investigator in 2011. Investigator Sprouse has had specialized training in Fire Fatalities, Blood Borne Pathogens, Forensic Anthropology, and Grade Crossing Collision Investigation, as well as Mass Casualty Incidents. Lorie is a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and the South Carolina Coroner's Association.
Hannah Arnold is a native of Spartanburg, SC and is an early graduate of Dorman High School. She also attended Spartanburg Methodist College where she graduated with an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice. Hannah began volunteering in February of 2016 with the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office before becoming a Reserve Investigator in August of 2016. Hannah became a full-time investigator in February of 2017 and has since completed specialized training in Grade Crossing Collision Investigations, Homicide Investigations, Forensic Pathology and Public Safety Response to Active Shooter Events. Hannah is also a member of the South Carolina Coroner's Association.
Investigator Steven Horton is a native of Spartanburg County and has been with the Coroner's Office since November 2018. Investigator Horton began his career in law enforcement in 2009 at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility. He has since served at the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office where he was assigned as a Uniform Patrol Officer and then transferred to the Crime Scene Unit where he was awarded Crime Scene Investigator of the year for 2013. He also served as a Homicide team leader where he was in charge of the processing of homicide scenes. Investigator Horton was also a volunteer firefighter for New Prospect Fire Dept.
Investigator Horton has graduated the South Carolina Criminal Justice academy in Basic law and Basic Jail training. He also completed the South Carolina Fire Academy training as a certified Firefighter 2. Investigator Horton has obtained extensive training in Homicide Investigations, Fire Investigations, Blood Stain Pattern Analysis, Shooting Reconstruction, Medical First Responder, Wound Pattern Analysis, Crime Scene Reconstruction, Investigating causes of Death, Hazmat operations, Incident Command Management, and many other fields of specialized training.
Investigator Sara Kruger was born in Manchester, Iowa and graduated as Salutatorian from Mount Vernon High School in May 2008. She went onto get her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Forensic Investigations at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She graduated early in high standing and was awarded the title of Summa Cum Laude in December 2011.
Investigator Kruger moved to Spartanburg County in August 2012 where she began her career in Law Enforcement with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. She graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Basic Law and Basic Jail training. Investigator Kruger became a member of the Crime Scene Unit at the Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and attended Basic Crime Scene Processing and Fingerprint Recognition Classes. She has also had training in underwater investigations and served as a member of the Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. Investigator Kruger has had training in Swift Water Rescue and is also certified Heartsaver CPR AED by the American Heart Association.
Investigator Rick McCraw has been with the Coroner's Office for 4.5 years. He has an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice. Investigator McCraw is a graduate of South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Basic Law Enforcement with other specialized training. Rick has over 26 years of law enforcement experience with employments with the SC Department of Corrections, Spartanburg City Police Department and the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Investigator McCraw retired as a Chief of Investigators with the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office. He has experience in uniform patrol, criminal investigations, crime scene videography and photography, interview and interrogations skills, child interview, crime prevention and community relations, prosecutorial case preparations, jury selection and evidence custodian. Rick is certified by the International Association for Property and Evidence as a property and evidence specialist. Investigator McCraw is a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and the South Carolina Coroner's Association. He is a volunteer for the Guardian Ad Litem and with the American Cancer Society.
Cynthia Cantrell Lathan was born in Spartanburg County where she has resided her entire life. She attended Boiling Springs High School and is a graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College and The University of South Carolina - Spartanburg with degrees in Criminal Justice. Cynthia is a member of Lake Bowen Baptist Church and is a strong advocate for children, she serves on the boards of the Spartanburg County Foster Parent Association and P.S. I Love You Ministries. Cynthia has a background with the Department of Social Services, she is a Certified Adoptions Investigator and has completed numerous courses in child abuse/neglect and death investigations.
Investigator Mark Link is a U.S. Army Veteran and the Vice President of an electrical business here in Spartanburg. He joined the Coroner's Office in 2015. Investigator Link volunteers his time to his community and the Coroner's Office. Mark is a member of the South Carolina Coroner's Association.
Investigator Monica Link has an Associate's Degree in Marketing/Business, Paralegal Degree and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She attended Greenville Technical College, USC and Converse College. Investigator Link joined the Coroner's Office in 2015. Monica is the Office Manager of the family business and volunteers for her community. She is a member of the South Carolina Coroner's Association.
Investigator Meryl Phillips is a native of Spartanburg County and a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School. Investigator Phillips attended the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Investigator Phillips began volunteering with the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office in January 2018 and began her reserve investigator career in August 2018.
